Historically, surgical gynecological procedures have taken a huge toll on the body. Before minimally invasive techniques, patients expected recovery from GYN surgery to take a 2 months or longer. As techniques improved, recovery had been reduced to weeks. At The Center for Innovative GYN Care, our surgical specialists have gone even farther, helping patients return to their normal lives in days.
Not all doctors devote time in their training to laparoscopic techniques. For many, open procedures remain their comfort zone. Finding a surgeon who focuses all of their practice on minimally invasive surgery is imperative to a better, faster recovery.
Choosing a surgeon is an important step. Not every surgeon has the skill or experience to safely perform minimally invasive procedures. New advances, including robotic procedures are often used by surgeons who have limited experience in minimally invasive surgery, and who are more comfortable with open, invasive procedures. Patients who undergo robotic or open procedures have much longer recoveries than standard laparoscopic or DualPortGYN procedures.
DualPortGYN is a technique developed by the surgical specialists at The Center for Innovative GYN Care. The goal was to create a technique that was THE MOST minimally invasive, while still being able to perform procedures safely for complex conditions.
The large single incision with an open procedure can keep a patient out of commission for up to 2 months. This is considered invasive surgery. The muscles heal from the outside in, so as the incision heals, the patient can be in severe pain for a long portion of the recovery time.
This technique involves a doctor standing across the room manning the controls of 5 robotic arms that are inserted into the abdomen of the patient. The robot is marketed as a solution for doctors who are not specialists in minimally invasive surgery to perform laparoscopic procedures. Unless the surgeon using the robot has extensive training in minimally invasive procedures, he or she should not be using a robot to perform GYN surgery. (AAGL quote)
Robotics Complications Trump Benefits
Standard GYN laparoscopy uses up to 4 incisions. It is preferred to robotics or open procedures. The incisions are smaller, the recovery can be faster, and there is a significant cost savings. Standard conventional laparoscopy does NOT use retroperitoneal dissection techniques, and can be limited in the extent of surgery performed. It is important to understand that not all surgeons performing this technique have the same skills or experience. The results with conventional laparoscopy, therefore, depend on the training and focus of the surgeon doing the procedure.
DualPortGYN procedures use two 5 mm incisions to perform the procedure, along with retroperitoneal dissection (RPD). RPD allows the surgery to be performed safely and effectively by mapping the pelvis. DualPortGYN is the least invasive gynecological surgery available worldwide. Standard laparoscopic or robotic approaches to surgery do not map the pelvis using the retroperitoneal approach. If vital structures are not identified during surgery, there is a risk of injury leading to higher complication rates and longer recovery times.
Returning to your normal life faster can help improve your overall outlook after GYN surgery. Returning to work, or being active with exercise that you love can bring a sense of normalcy. Many women experience a sense of loss after a hysterectomy. Pain can be a constant reminder. Freedom from pain can help start the emotional healing. The DualPortGYN advantage allows you to recover with less pain.
In addition to the faster recovery, minimal scarring from DualPortGYN means getting out and enjoying summer activities like going to the pool or the beach and not being afraid of donning the skimpy bikini.
