March is Endometriosis Awareness Month

Early Detection, Intervention Can Minimize Damage

More than five million women in the U.S. suffer with endometriosis and, while difficult to diagnose, this disorder not only causes extreme pain, it can often also lead to infertility. Endometriosis is a painful chronic condition that occurs when cells, similar to those in the lining of the uterus, are discovered in the pelvic cavity. In rare cases, endometriosis has been found in other areas of the body, including the lungs and in the brain. These cells behave like the cells found in the uterine lining, and each month the surrounding tissue can become irritated. Inflammation from endometriosis may lead to scar tissue or pelvic adhesions which can result in severe pain with every monthly cycle. If ignored, the pain can become constant.

During Endometriosis Awareness Month, we want to take a moment to encourage women who experience intense menstrual pain to get evaluated early by a GYN specialist. At The Center for Innovative GYN Care® (CIGC®), advanced laparoscopic GYN specialists have the expertise to diagnose and remove this complex GYN condition with a minimally invasive endometriosis excision technique, which may help women get pregnant. While there are treatment options for endometriosis, currently, there is no cure for the disease.

Finding the Right Specialist

Hearing from other women who have shared the same experience can build confidence to seek the right specialist. If you have suffered for years with unsuccessful treatments, you can easily get disillusioned into thinking you have to live with the pain. Encouragement from others who have lived through it and come out the other side can instill hope.

It’s always better to seek a specialist from the beginning, but without knowledge of available procedures, women often turn to their OBGYN for advice. Even with a focus on women’s health, these highly skilled physicians aren’t performing GYN surgeries to the extent that a GYN surgical specialist does. Many of the CIGC patients who have suffered from endometriosis have found that previous treatments with other providers actually made their endometriosis worse. Depending on the procedure used, and the extent of a woman’s condition, getting the right treatment early by a GYN specialist can reduce the risk of recurrence.

Complete removal of endometriosis by a surgical expert is critical for pain management, and potential pregnancy success. Depending on the extent of the disease, the surgeon may be able to take a conservative approach to removal to preserve the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus for fertility, or the surgeon may need to remove the ovaries to control the production of estrogen. While endometriosis cannot fully be cured, choosing a GYN specialist for removal is an essential part of managing the condition. If removed incorrectly, endometrial implants can continue to cause pain and affect fertility.

CIGC specialists Dr. Paul MacKoul and Dr. Natalya Danilyants developed DualPortGYN, a minimally invasive technique used for endometriosis excision. This procedure uses two 5mm incisions, one at the belly button and another at the bikini line, so patients have a better overall recovery and return home the same day. All procedures are performed in an outpatient setting. The DualPortGYN technique uses an advanced procedure that maps the pelvis, allowing for complete identification of all the structures of the pelvis — such as the bowel, bladder, ureters, and large vessels — allowing for safe, fertility-friendly, and effective results with the best recovery possible.

CIGC Patients Advocate

After successful treatment at CIGC for endometriosis, our patients often go on to become advocates, encouraging others to find the best specialists. Their experience with our surgeons builds awareness of our advanced minimally invasive solutions that help women recover from surgery in days, and find relief from the pain almost immediately. By sharing with others through online support groups or at events like EndoMarch, women who find answers at CIGC for what can be a debilitating condition, go on to help other women find the support they need.
