For GYN cancer patients, choosing a surgeon sets the tone for your overall treatment. When you are confident that your treatment and recovery are managed well, you can focus on healing. Specialists in GYN oncology have extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the female reproductive system, including ovarian canceruterine cancer, and cervical cancer.

GYN surgical specialists focus solely on minimally invasive GYN care. The advantage of working with a GYN specialist who is also a GYN oncologist means that the surgeon will understand your unique needs and be able to tailor treatment accordingly.

KNOW YOUR TREATMENT OPTIONS

Surgeons should assess cancer patients on a case-by-case basis to choose the best treatment options. There are many different types of treatment options, and the type of surgical procedure needed depends on the stage and grade of cancer.

Ovarian cancer stage is determined surgically and is usually the initial step in treatment followed by chemotherapy and, in some cases, radiation. Read more to learn about genetic testing for ovarian cancer.

Endometrial cancer, the most common GYN cancer, is typically limited to the uterus, with most patients having complete removal of the cancer with hysterectomy. Staging is performed at the time of the laparoscopic procedure to determine if the cancer has spread, and involves removal of the tubes and ovaries, node dissection, or removal of the lymph nodes during the procedure. Uterine cancers or sarcomas, are more rare. Read more about uterine and endometrial cancers.

Cervical cancer, as with other cancers, is described in terms of its presence, specifically in and beyond the cervix. The stage of the cancer describes the extent to which it has spread beyond the cervix, if at all.

THE BENEFITS OF LAPAROSCOPIC PROCEDURES

Patients of laparoscopic procedures have a short hospital stay or none at all, minimal pain, and a fast recovery. Since recovery is so easy and fast, patients feel less sick afterward, which contributes greatly to an optimistic outlook. Feeling better physically and mentally makes the rest of the cancer treatment and recovery process more tolerable. At the end of treatment, patients get to walk away with minimal scarring.

CIGC Surgical Specialists Dr. Natalya Danilyants, MD and Dr. Paul J. MacKoul, MD

As a patient who has been diagnosed with dysplasia or cancer of the cervix, uterus, or ovaries, it is important to find a surgeon you trust. For many types of cancer, surgery is the only cure.

Dr. Paul J. MacKoul, MD is certified in gynecology and gynecologic oncology. His sole focus is surgery for benign and malignant GYN conditions. CIGC surgeons Dr. MacKoul and Dr. Natalya Danilyants, MD have revolutionized minimally invasive procedures that help patients recover faster. DualPortGYN can be used for any GYN condition, including cancer. CIGC minimally invasive, advanced laparoscopic hysterectomies are far superior to open or robotic procedures.

CIGC SURGEONS DO NOT PERFORM OPEN OR ROBOTIC HYSTERECTOMIES

Open surgeries are known to be painful, have a relatively high risk of complications, and have an extended recovery period. Surgeries in which robotic technology performs the procedure is extremely expensive and has a high risk of complications, with the risk of converting to an open procedure if the doctor in charge runs into trouble.
