Urban Health Beat: Minimally Invasive Fibroid Surgery

Advancements in minimally invasive GYN surgery at The Center for Innovative GYN Care have made it possible for women to have only 2 small incisions for fibroid removal, or a hysterectomy. Women no longer need to have a large, open abdominal incision or 5-8 incisions in a semi-circle across the abdomen with a robot. The minimally invasive techniques developed by the specialists at CIGC can treat complex GYN conditions, including large fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, enlarged uteri, adenomyosis and other GYN conditions.

While these groundbreaking techniques have helped thousands of women recover from GYN surgery with less pain, there are still thousands more who are undergoing open or robotic procedures unnecessarily. It is still very common for patients to only listen to their primary doctor about surgical options rather than seeking a 2nd or 3rd opinion. And women who have seen other members of their family or friends undergo these procedures often resign themselves to idea that open surgery is inevitable. This is why seeking a second or third opinion with a fellowship trained GYN surgical specialist is so important.

Common Fibroid Myths Debunked

Getting the conversation started is one of the main goals of Uncovered: The Truth About GYN Surgery, an educational campaign that aims to bridge the GYN knowledge gap. Women from around the country are coming to CIGC after doing research online. The also return to the practice after moving away and seeing limited options in their new cities.

In an effort to continue the advocacy outreach, on Wednesday, October 14th, Dr. Gary Jennings (guest host for Urban Health Beat on WEAA-FM, 88.9 in Baltimore, MD), interviewed Dr. Natalya Danilyants, MD and Celeste Doaks, a patient of Dr. Danilyants who had suffered from large fibroids.

During the call in show on WEAA-FM, 88.9 in Baltimore, MD, listeners who had suffered, or whose wives had suffered with fibroids, called in to share their stories, and ask questions about some common myths. Many of those beliefs can lead to complications down the line.

Minimally Invasive Fibroid Surgery at CIGC

LAAM (laparoscopic assisted abdominal myomectomy) was developed by the specialists at CIGC. It is a minimally invasive fibroid removal surgery that leaves the uterus intact for fertility. It it a hybrid technique that takes the best of both open and laparoscopic procedures. It is thorough, so all of the fibroids can be removed, and it uses 2 minimally invasive incisions (one 5MM at the belly button, and one 3CM incision at the bikini line) so that patients have a better recovery. CIGC LAAM patients typically recover in 10-14 days. Traditional open procedures can take up to 8 weeks to heal. Robotic procedures can take up to 4 weeks.
