How Scar Tissue Forms and Why it Can Be a Cause of Infertility

Many patients have had surgery to the uterus that results in the formation of scar tissue in the uterine cavity. The uterine cavity has a lush lining that, in regular circumstances, allows the embryo to implant and grow into a pregnancy.

Surgery performed to the cavity — such as a D&C (dilatation and curettage or scraping of the cavity) or fibroid removal — can lead to the formation of scar tissue in the cavity and lining. Infections in the uterine cavity can also cause scar tissue to form. Scar tissue in the lining can prevent the implantation of the embryo. For this reason, any patient with scar tissue in the cavity from prior surgery or infection will require removal of the scar tissue to allow for pregnancy to occur.

Removal of Scar Tissue and Polyps by a Minimally Invasive GYN Specialist Increases Your Chances of Pregnancy

These procedures are performed with a hysteroscope, a camera that is inserted into the uterine cavity with a special device to remove the scar tissue. After the scar tissue has been removed, a form-fitting balloon is placed into the uterus to prevent scar tissue reformation. The lining of the cavity is then treated to allow for regrowth. Up to 95% of patients treated with this protocol develop a cavity that is functional to allow for a successful pregnancy.

Polyps — noncancerous growths attached to the inner wall of the uterus — in the cavity can also develop and prevent implantation of an embryo. Polpys are also removed with a hysteroscope.

The recovery after these procedures is typically only one to two days. Patients can often begin trying to become pregnant in one to two months after these procedures. As with any specialized procedure, be sure that the surgeon performing the procedure is a specialist that is well versed in the treatment of uterine scarring to ensure the best chance of conceiving and carrying a baby to term.
