WHAT EVERY WOMAN NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT LAPAROSCOPIC GYN SURGERY IN 2016

Know what you are getting into when you are facing a hysterectomy. Choosing an experienced surgical specialist and a procedure that will allow for a fast recovery with less pain should be at the top of the list for every woman.

Hysterectomy is one of the top procedures performed every year in the United States, and too many of those procedures are performed as invasive, open surgeries.

In this month’s WTOP article, The Center for Innovative GYN Care focuses on the importance of choosing your surgeon, the procedure itself, and the risks of the other types of procedures so that women can see the comparison side-by-side.

There are also different surgical procedures that may be performed simultaneously with a hysterectomy that are often lumped together, so that many people believe that a hysterectomy starts menopause. Getting the facts will help women make the best decision about surgery for her body.

EXCERPT:

Don’t Settle For Your Mother’s Hysterectomy

An estimated 500,000 hysterectomies will be performed in the United States in 2016, with many of them as higher risk procedures: invasive open hysterectomy, blind vaginal hysterectomy, or robotic hysterectomy procedures.

The high level of risk associated with these types of hysterectomies can lead to additional surgeries to repair delicate areas in the pelvis that can be damaged during the operation, including the bowel, bladder, ureter or blood vessels. Bowel injuries can lead to life-threatening infections that must be addressed immediately. It is important to understand what a hysterectomy entails, possible complications that can arise due to pelvic adhesions, and to choose a skilled minimally invasive GYN surgeon who will explain in detail what will happen during and after the surgery.

THE BETTER MINIMALLY INVASIVE HYSTERECTOMY: DUALPORTGYN

A DualPortGYN hysterectomy is one of the most minimally invasive GYN surgery techniques available. An improvement on standard laparoscopy, DualPortGYN was developed by the minimally invasive GYN specialists at The Center for Innovative GYN Care (CIGC) to help women heal faster and created a safer procedure in the process. Hysterectomies performed with DualPortGYN take advantage of specialized techniques that help to control blood loss and map the pelvic cavity. Hysterectomies can be performed using just 2 small incisions no larger than a paper cut through the midline. This means that the incisions do not have to go through the muscle, and patients experience less discomfort.

DualPortGYN hysterectomies are performed on an outpatient basis, either at a state-of-the-art ambulatory surgical center (ASC) or at a hospital depending on each patient’s specific needs. Patients return home the same day and many women within the first 24 hours are able to see a significant improvement in the pain. Every CIGC patient is provided individualized care and attention by our fellowship trained minimally invasive GYN specialistsDr. Paul MacKoul, MD and Dr. Natalya Danilyants, MD.
