Traveling for Minimally Invasive GYN Surgery: What You Need to Know

We want to make traveling for GYN surgery from long distances as seamless as possible.

Initial Consultation

The Center for Innovative GYN Care is located in the Washington, D.C. area, with 3 offices. However, for patients intending to travel over long distances for surgery, the initial conversation may be conducted via phone. This will be determined on a patient by patient basis by the CIGC surgeons.

Documentation about your condition, such as MRIs or ultrasounds need to be submitted to our surgeons via fax or email to ascertain if we are the appropriate provider for your surgical care. All documentation needs to be no older than 90 days. Once it is established that CIGC is the right place for the patient, our laparoscopic specialists will discuss the best surgical options during a phone conversation.

Step 1 Book A Consultation

Call CIGC or fill out the online form.

  • A Patient Relations Coordinator assists with scheduling the appointment.
  • Insurance can be verified prior to the appointment.
  • A credit card is required to confirm the appointment.

Step 2 Discuss Surgical Options

The CIGC specialists review each patient case in advance of the consultation.

  • Prior to speaking to the surgeon, test and imaging results should be sent to CIGC.

During the consultation:

  • Talk about your condition or symptoms.
  • Discuss your expectations.
  • Learn about your options for treatment.

Step 3 Schedule Your Surgery

If surgery is recommended, and patients choose to move forward with CIGC, our finance and insurance specialists help patients understand their options prior to scheduling the surgery.

A CIGC Surgical Scheduler contacts patients to schedule surgery. The surgical scheduler is the primary contact through this process, and can answer any questions patients may have.

  • A surgical package is emailed with instructions for pre-op, including tests that may be required.
  • All materials should be read before surgery, including Post-Op instructions.

Step 4 Day Of Surgery

Surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure either at a surgery center or local hospital.

  • Arrive at the appointed time. This will be communicated prior to the day of surgery.
  • Please clear your entire day so that there are no delays.
  • Patients must be accompanied by a responsible adult over the age of 18 to drive them home.

Step 5 Recovery

Patients are discharged after their surgery to recover in the comfort of their home.

  • Specific post-op instructions are provided in the discharge information. This information is also provided before the surgery.
  • There will be a physician on-call to address any patient concerns after release from surgical center or hospital. Alternatively, during business hours, patients can contact the office for concerns.
  • Within the first three days after surgery, patients will receive a follow-up call from a nurse to check-in on their progress.

If an ER visit is necessary, always go to the nearest hospital emergency room.

Step 6 Post-Operative Consultation

The CIGC office contacts patients within 48-72 hours after surgery to schedule a post-op appointment.

  • This appointment will be scheduled for 2-4 weeks after the surgery.
  • Patients who are referred by their doctor to CIGC are transitioned back to their referring physician with all information about the procedure after the post-op visit with the CIGC specialist.
  • If CIGC patients have additional questions about their surgery or recovery after their post-op visit with the specialist, the CIGC staff will be happy to assist.

Planning Travel

CIGC travel patients will either have surgery performed in Rockville, MD or Secaucus, NJ.
