What Is Cervical Dysplasia?
Cervical dysplasia, typically detected through Pap tests, refers to abnormal or precancerous cells on the outside of the cervix. If untreated, these cells over time can turn cancerous and grow deeper into the cervix and surrounding tissue. It can, however, take years for untreated cervical dysplasia to reach this stage, and many cases that are caught early and watched resolve on their own.
Women in their mid-40s are most likely to see abnormal cells progress to cancer.
Cervical dysplasia often is caused by the common sexually transmitted infection HPV, or human papillomavirus. There are many strains of HPV, and more than 10 are believed to put women at high risk for cervical cancer. However, having HPV or cervical dysplasia does not always mean cervical cancer will develop: The immune system eliminates about three-quarters of HPV infections.
Because many women do not experience any symptoms during early–stage cervical cancer, routine Pap tests are essential for detection.

Treatments for cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer depend on the extent of the condition. They range from “watch and wait” and minor medical procedures to hysterectomy for advanced stages.
